I could become so emotionally invested in your company, that when the chips are down \u2013 when your corporate reputation takes a hit due to whatever crisis and your stock price plummets \u2013 you could count on me to hang around and to stick it out. You cannot buy this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lucilleossai.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/14\/why-commitment-would-always-matter\/\">affective commitment<\/a>&nbsp;and my decision to stay in your company, the improbability of lifelong employment notwithstanding, would be the result of three key reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I would stay in your company a really long time IF\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) You inculcate a culture of transparency, credibility and fairness<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-9ek6EXDGLK8\/U2EZerAT__I\/AAAAAAAABV0\/Ws5jmKf5vyc\/s1600\/Stock+man+on+help+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Renjith+Krishnan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-9ek6EXDGLK8\/U2EZerAT__I\/AAAAAAAABV0\/Ws5jmKf5vyc\/s1600\/Stock+man+on+help+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Renjith+Krishnan.jpg?resize=640%2C424\" alt=\"\" width=\"819\" height=\"545\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I can appreciate that this point might come as a big surprise to you but it is actually the most powerful incentive for a long tenure in your organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">But it must be done the right way and it must be sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I realise that due to different dynamics, Management would change often but values should not. In fact, values should be certain and unyielding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You must strive to be <em>transparent<\/em>. Ensure that guidelines for operations are clear and develop checks to prevent sabotage and\/or incompetence. It must be consistently communicated that every member of the organisation is accountable for his actions: from you, Mr CEO, to the new associate who has just begun his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Aspire to become <em>credible<\/em>. Remove bottlenecks and eliminate unethical practices and fraudulent inclinations. I am a straight arrow; most of your employees are, so encourage us to continue to be that way. You are the most important driver of perceptions, so make your actions reflect your convictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You also need to prioritise <em>fairness<\/em>. Your policies, especially when they affect interpersonal relationships and professional development, must be fair. Moreover, compensation, benefits and entitlements\u00a0should all be given when due and should not be delayed by internal politics. Remuneration at the very least should be within the acceptable industry range. Espouse diversity and eliminate discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Do a corporate culture overhaul and I would not be going anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) You ensure excellent professional development<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The fact that I sought out your company, applied for my job and now, that I generally like my role is a good indication that I actually want to stay in your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">But I need to be challenged. I need to find purpose in my career and I need to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Therefore, providing me with essential training and encouraging me to become responsible for my own professional development, whilst providing me with the support, time and resources in order to do so, would speak volumes to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">For example, supporting me in a\u00a0 new career path (I\u00a0 might want to switch departments or functional responsibilities) as well as approving a study leave for me to pursue my master&#8217;s or to upgrade my skills, whilst guaranteeing my job security, would be fantastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-je32ff13xtM\/U2EZ-LM0VzI\/AAAAAAAABV4\/GdRd6JKSseg\/s1600\/Coaching+etc+-+freedigitalpotos.net+David+Castillo+Dominici.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-je32ff13xtM\/U2EZ-LM0VzI\/AAAAAAAABV4\/GdRd6JKSseg\/s1600\/Coaching+etc+-+freedigitalpotos.net+David+Castillo+Dominici.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"812\" height=\"609\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Likewise, being considered for a coveted role after the newly acquired qualifications, or making international work placements available, would be viewed with great appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Factor in a couple of dedicated and experienced executives to mentor me at every stage of my career development and I promise you this \u2014 I would not be leaving you any time soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) You communicate clearly and consistently<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And I mean communicating in simple language, regularly and without bias. In fact, clear communication must be encouraged, especially by your executive cadre. Good communication is not a privilege; it is a necessity for greater organisational effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Let us also not forget the importance of feedback. Without\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/lucilleossai.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/28\/feedback-the-most-important-facet-in-communications\/\" target=\"_blank\">timely and factual feedback<\/a>, your vision, company initiatives and goals neither would be effective nor supported. There just would be too much ambiguity and prolonged speculation to make acceptance possible. Moreover, I would not care for anything that I do not understand or believe in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You may want to make an <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/staffbase.com\/blog\/why-investing-in-internal-communication-benefits-business\/\" target=\"_blank\">investment in your internal communications function.<\/a>\u00a0Among other things, it is believed that this move would create a cooperative culture, incite talent development and promote internal branding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Age Of Social Media<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-61tAdmz3wzs\/U2EbSbC79nI\/AAAAAAAABWE\/KAEHfBfWRwQ\/s1600\/Cartoon+businessmen+communicating+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Ratch0013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-61tAdmz3wzs\/U2EbSbC79nI\/AAAAAAAABWE\/KAEHfBfWRwQ\/s1600\/Cartoon+businessmen+communicating+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Ratch0013.jpg?resize=640%2C640\" alt=\"\" width=\"821\" height=\"821\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We also live in the digital age and virtually all your employees have smartphones, tablets, and other communication devices. The ease with which we communicate today is unprecedented, making opinionated people powerful advocates of company brands or formidable adversaries. So I suggest you use the power of social media to build your corporate reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We may be out of the office most of the time but no matter how busy we are, we, your employees, use our devices. Most of us are active on at least one of the major social media platforms where we share information, vent, and discuss breaking news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Your company has hopefully realised the importance of social media to its corporate identity and you may have set up a social media team to manage the company\u2019s online presence. Slots on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and even YouTube might even be in the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">But here is the thing Mr CEO \u2014 <em>you<\/em> are not visible online and that somewhat bothers me. This is because I believe that your presence would make your company\u2019s social strategy more authentic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In fact, I have read some interesting\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/chrisperry\/2013\/05\/29\/research-social-media-finally-seen-as-essential-for-ceos\/\" target=\"_blank\">research<\/a>\u00a0that was carried out by Weber Shandwick, in partnership with KRC. They surveyed over 600 senior executives from 10 markets worldwide. They revealed that 76% of global executives wanted their CEOs to engage in social media. The benefits of this engagement included a positive impact on the company&#8217;s reputation and business results,\u00a0the improved ability to share company news\/information, and communicating more directly with employees, customers, and other key stakeholders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This all makes sense given that social media is all about relationships and about building trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I suggest Mr CEO, that you join Twitter at the very least and regularly post messages about company news, relevant industry insights and your opinions. If I were to become one of your followers, then receiving updates from you would make me more inclined to trust you. Obviously, the more I trust you, the more committed I would become in my job and the more likely I would&nbsp; remain in your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Do not be overly anxious about putting yourself \u2018out there\u2019. Many CEOs, founders and notable personalities do it. To name a few: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/Richardbranson\" target=\"_blank\">Richard Branson<\/a>&nbsp;of the Virgin Group tweets regularly about company information and causes after his own heart, as does&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/BillGates\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Gates<\/a>&nbsp;of Microsoft and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/ariannahuff\" target=\"_blank\">Arianna Huffington<\/a>, President\/Editor-In-Chief of the Huffington Post media group. Then in January this year,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/AlikoDangote\" target=\"_blank\">Aliko Dangote<\/a>, President of the Dangote Group and according to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/aliko-dangote\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes<\/a>, Africa\u2019s richest man in 2013, joined the world of Twitter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So, Mr CEO, you would be in great company if you take your cues from them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Contrary to what those in management circles may think \u2014 it is not always about the money when a professional is considering a long, successful tenure in an organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2v2q8S-xb1k\/U2EfAxvxHyI\/AAAAAAAABWQ\/fpiNlxYk07w\/s1600\/Man+waving+at+ladder+of+success+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Renjith+Krishnan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-2v2q8S-xb1k\/U2EfAxvxHyI\/AAAAAAAABWQ\/fpiNlxYk07w\/s1600\/Man+waving+at+ladder+of+success+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Renjith+Krishnan.jpg?resize=640%2C424\" alt=\"\" width=\"817\" height=\"543\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">All the points I have given could be summed up in a single piece of advice: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Show me by both your words <em>and<\/em> actions that you really care about the things that matter to my career and I would return the favour.\u00a0 I would go \u2018over and beyond\u2019 in my duties and I would stay with you for a really long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It is really that simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So, what is your strategy for retaining me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">P.S<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-FU2XAg4ecgg\/U2EhXI6bPVI\/AAAAAAAABWc\/j8epGqdo3Lg\/s1600\/Suggestion+of+blog+topic.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Property of Rethinking Business Communications Blog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">This blog post was written because a viewer made the suggestion in the \u2018comments\u2019 section in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So kindly keep your suggestions coming.
