You really would prefer to be left alone to do your best work.&nbsp; I get it. I am an introvert myself. But here\u2019s the thing: you run a real risk of sabotaging your careers if you are not seen as, (gasp), team players. There is also a possibility of not receiving credit for your work or being passed over for promotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Extroverts \u2013 you may have to \u2018tame\u2019 yourselves and get over your&nbsp;big-fish-in-a-small-pond mentality for the sake of the teams. You too will be judged on how well you can co-operate with others. This unspoken assessment could make or break your&nbsp;careers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">So how do you, an introvert, work well in a&nbsp; diverse team to achieve the desired results?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">And how would you, an extrovert, rally the troops, while at the same time ensuring that there is a \u2018democracy\u2019 of influence within the group and that the strength of one does not overshadow the power of all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The simple answer is this \u2014 through effective teamwork communication. Remember that communication encompasses oral and verbal elements, as well as non-verbal, (body language) cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In the video below&nbsp;of the revised classic story of&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cThe Turtle and the Rabbit\u201d, we could learn some valuable lessons for good teamwork dynamics. (To view the video, you could also click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/u0fr_Lk3hXE\">here<\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/savefrom.net\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2Fu0fr_Lk3hXE&amp;utm_source=userjs-chrome&amp;utm_medium=extensions&amp;utm_campaign=link_modifier\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Story Of Turtle And Rabbit The New Version)\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u0fr_Lk3hXE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Let\u2019s address these tips or \u201crules of engagement\u201d closely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1) Know your uniqueness but willingly accept challenges<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The Turtle was aware that he was naturally disadvantaged and that technically, he could not win a race with the Rabbit whose greatest asset was his speed. But that did not deter the Turtle from accepting the race. Even after losing the first time, he did some thinking and having identified his core competency, challenged the Rabbit to a second race\u2026which he subsequently won.<br><br>Similarly, in a team environment, you will need to show that you are committed to the cause by rising to the challenge. You could do this by communicating your ideas clearly and simply. Suggest a meeting to tackle key areas and use a free web-based application such as Google Hangouts for instant messaging and video calls. Send emails or make calls. Take the minutes after discussions, send reminders and above all, give&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lucilleossai.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/28\/feedback-the-most-important-facet-in-communications\">timely and factual feedback<\/a>.&nbsp;If you are not the team lead on a project, support the lead\/supervisor by doing all these things whenever feasible. Such actions would soothe ruffled feathers and encourage the active participation of team members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-P_engeh-DuA\/U7A4LCGqdRI\/AAAAAAAABoY\/h27KxaPSynY\/s1600\/3D+man+standing+out+unique+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Cooldesign.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-P_engeh-DuA\/U7A4LCGqdRI\/AAAAAAAABoY\/h27KxaPSynY\/s1600\/3D+man+standing+out+unique+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Cooldesign.jpg?resize=503%2C377&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"820\" height=\"615\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">No one expects you to morph into a different being just to get the work done as you will end up feeling disingenuous if you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">However, as we should always strive to improve our communication skills and practise new,\u00a0<em>desired non-verbal behaviours<\/em>\u00a0until they become positive parts of our personas, there is an interesting school of thought, \u00e0 la Professor Amy Cuddy. These could include speaking up in meetings, assisting team members, being proactive in your assigned tasks and striving to bring value to the group. Help the team succeed and your efforts would be quietly noted. Moreover, you would become a better communicator and a wiser professional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2) Do not be over-confident<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Realise that the team\u2019s success lies in the sum of individual, productive parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The Rabbit learnt the hard way. As it was stated, he was so certain of his skill that he became lax. So while he was napping under a tree, the Turtle prodded on at its slow pace and won the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">During a team project, over-confidence can lead to costly mistakes, which if unchecked by the team lead or other members, could lead to financial or operational losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-aXltufrQLFY\/U7A64SNWosI\/AAAAAAAABok\/vDBPEvvfOlc\/s1600\/3D+man+demanding+listening+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Stuart+Miles.jpg?resize=452%2C452&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"823\" height=\"823\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Just because you can boast of a wealth of experience in a specific location or knowledge of a complex function that is invaluable to the project, does not mean you should \u2018lord\u2019 it over your team members. You do not need to dominate the conversation. Others may have valuable suggestions worth noting that you haven\u2019t considered in your persistent bid to \u2018prove\u2019 yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Communicate with humility: check the tone of your voice and speak in a controlled register when the entire team meets. Avoid using \u201cI\u201d consistently, except there\u2019s a vote and start suggestions with: \u201cLet\u2019s consider this\u2026\u201d;&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cPerhaps Mr  X could try this\u2026\u201d etc. No one likes to be lectured to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3) Seek clarity at all times<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">There is a possibility that members of your team may be based in other geographical regions where face-to-face meetings may not always be possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">True, with the technology available, you could manage projects by creating cloud-based \u2018shared folders\u2019, which every team member could assess via his computer or mobile device once the application is installed, as is available with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/\">Dropbox<\/a>. Similarly, you could have visual contact with team members via Skype,\u00a0or other alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">However, when it is impractical to use such applications for whatever reason, communication is likely to be restricted to emails and telephone calls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In such scenarios, clarity becomes crucial for execution.<br><br>In the video, after each one was beaten by the other, the Turtle and the Rabbit&nbsp;came together and had an honest conversation about their attributes. They were clear about their strategy for the team race and cooperated with each other, harnessing individual skills for a coordinated and flawless execution. The result? Seek clarity and transparency to ensure that team members are updated so that the project\u2019s pace is not stalled by incomplete information or other setbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4) Celebrate the team\u2019s success<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The success of one means the success of all. Even if you are the catalyst for your team\u2019s noteworthy feats, celebrate your contributions to the team\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-TK--3euQVhI\/U7A_0hUDmmI\/AAAAAAAABo8\/FPV5yf0qFWk\/s1600\/Team+success+with+man+carrying+sign+-+freedigitalphotos.net+Nongpimmy.jpg?resize=499%2C707&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"1149\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:32px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Be generous with your praise and express pride in the effort of the team. When working in a team, remember the \u201crules of engagement\u201d mentioned in this post and become a more effective team player.
