Active listening communicates a sense of worth. We all crave attention. Therefore, when we believe that we&#8217;re listened to, we become more convinced that our contributions are appreciated. This in turn, increases our discretionary efforts, leading to increased engagement. Researchers revealed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2016\/07\/what-great-listeners-actually-do)\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">an interesting take on the art of listening<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">in an article posted on the Harvard Business Review website. They determined that simply listening in silence, only to regurgitate what was said, does not constitute good listening. Instead, listening and asking meaningful questions promote insight. There&#8217;s also good advice given on how to engage with the speaker and explanations about how the different levels of listening should be handled.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; font-size: x-large; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">So if you&#8217;re not actively listening to your company when management articulates what is expected from you in the long-term, you&#8217;re doing yourself a disservice. Not prioritising this skill will be detrimental to your business, especially as a startup. I also distinguished between two groups of people who don&#8217;t give feedback. In the first group are the <\/span><i>&#8216;Ostrich&#8217; <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">people &#8211; these are folks who don&#8217;t want to be the bearers of bad news, thus they avoid giving unfavourable feedback. In the second camp, the <\/span><i>&#8216;What&#8217;s-In-It-For-Me&#8217; <\/i><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">people feel entitled and don&#8217;t give feedback unless they have a vested interest in the<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">recipients&#8217; circumstances. Professionals in both groups automatically sabotage their careers because their behaviours cause others to view them as untrustworthy, unreliable and incompetent.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">Feedback, as we all know, is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/elt\/blog\/2014\/03\/five-reasons-feedback-may-important-skill\/\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">crucial for the effectiveness of people<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"> and, by extension, processes. For the organisational wheel to function properly, feedback must be consistently provided. Still, when it comes to <\/span><em>constructive feedback<\/em><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">, we don&#8217;t relish our mistakes being highlighted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">Now you may decide that it&#8217;s easier to give feedback than to receive it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">But both ways can be difficult to handle. For example, think about how awkward it will be to tell your boss that <\/span><u style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">his<\/u><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"> error cost your company millions. Now think about how uncomfortable he&#8217;ll feel listening to you suggest steps he could take to mitigate the effects of the crisis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">Did you cringe?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">No, constructive feedback is not always pleasant, but it is necessary.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">So why do we loathe feedback?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\"><span style=\"color: initial;\">Some research suggests that the fear of giving or receiving feedback may be all in our heads and that there is a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.success.com\/article\/how-to-overcome-the-fear-of-feedback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">psychological component to this fear<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: initial;\">.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 115%;\">Backed by science, the article explains that we tend to avoid constructive feedback because of a fight-or-flight bias (caused by hormones), even though we&#8217;re not in any physical danger. We also remember criticisms more sharply. Problems cannot be wished away, nor can mistakes be undone.
