LinkedIn, the authoritative professional social networking powerhouse, recently released its 2020 study<\/a> on the most attractive skills that companies desire this year. They reviewed data from their \u201cnetwork of over 660+ million professionals and 20+ million jobs to reveal the 15 most in-demand soft and hard skills of 2020\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unsurprisingly, the top five hard skills were blockchain, cloud computing, analytic reasoning, Artificial Intelligence,  and UX design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the soft skills – creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and emotional intelligence reigned supreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because of the rise of innovation and advanced technologies, which are signalling a shift in focus, we\u2019re in danger of relegating \u2018soft\u2019 skills such as effective communication, to the fringe. Yet, LinkedIn cited persuasion<\/em> (encompassing effective communication in speech and writing) as the second most desired \u2018soft\u2019 skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now\nyou \u2018hard\u2019 skills advocates might be unconvinced about the relevance of effective\ncommunication in driving innovation or leading change. Therefore, I\u2019ve listed\nthree reasons to persuade you that communication is critical to the success of any\ntechnical endeavour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1) Effective communication drives action<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

It\nall boils down to one thing: being able to explain your advanced technologies simply,\nconcisely, and clearly.  To succeed, you\u2019d\nfirst need to know how to move hearts, before attempting to convince minds to\ntake action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether orally, in writing, or during one-to-one (interpersonal) communication, you can\u2019t rally collaboration for your project, or inspire people to support you without communicating your \u2018why\u2019 – the purpose and drive behind your shiny object, your top-notch data, or your \u2018disrupting\u2019 service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
